Captain’s Log 21 (Gmail, Outlook, and AVG Anti-Virus)

GmailI recently wrote about using AVG to scan Gmail e-mail when using Outlook or Outlook Express as the client. However, I discovered a problem in the original instructions on Grisoft’s website.

According to Grisoft’s instructions, users are directed to “Do the same with SMTP, using port 587 or 465 (either is a valid port for gmail), except set the connection type to ’secure to regular port (STARTTLS)‘.” Unfortunately setting the SMTP connection to use STARTTLS denies the SMTP connection to Gmail. I did not realize that every e-mail I sent out in Outlook was not leaving my laptop. I figured this out a few hours ago when I tried to send some time-sensitive VERY important e-mail and the intended recipient was not getting the e-mail. In order to fix the problem, the user needs to change the connection type from STARTTLS to TLS in AVG SMTP.

I used AVG’s built in diagnostic logging function to determine the problem.
“Cannot connect to smtp.gmail.com:465
Connect: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. (10060)”

I apologize for any inconvenience that this might have caused and will continue to monitor Outlook and AVG to make sure this is not a broader problem.

  1. Turn off AVG for outgoing mail…If your lappy is free from viruses, then you won’t be sending them out.

  2. Uh huh, check your e-mail! :P
