Captain’s Log 35 (An Ungrateful Society)

Wow, can you believe that some people complain about others? Especially when people put their lives on the line?

Read my reply to an ungrateful Facebook poster, Jeremy McCrory
You can read the entire thread at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2228861618 (I don’t know if you have to be a member to view the group or not).

Hi Jeremy,
I’m a campus police officer as well. I will second the comment made by Brad in saying that we had no decision in regards to the installation or placement of the speed bumps on campus. Since I have moved on campus I have replaced the front shocks in my SUV and I attribute that directly the speed bumps here on campus.

Secondly, I would like to address your comment about campus police “thinking” they are real cops. I, once again, agree with my supervisor (Brad) in saying that we are fully commissioned police officers with the New Orleans Police Department. In addition to the commissioning of the campus police officers I’ll be the first to tell you that many of the police officers on the campus police department that put their lives on the line every day to protect the property and people like you with bad attitudes and sardonic comments have had prior law enforcement experience. We risk everything every day we put on our shirts that say “Police” and wear a gun. Trust me, we stand out and people see that.

If you need more proof of the officers and friends I work with having law enforcement experience I’ll give you a quick run-down of my own history:
In 2003 I served in the Louisiana Army National Guard as a military policeman for the 256 Infantry Brigade (Mechanized) out of Lafayette, Louisiana. Because of a shoulder injury I was medically discharged from active-duty service. Training was hard and usually meant we would work outside for 20 of 24 hours in 100 degree heat.
In 2004 I worked for the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Department in the corrections division. We housed and managed inmates on a daily basis for 24 hours a day (most of those with repugnant attitudes like yours). Risking my life to, once again, protect the small percentage of ungrateful public. Training was rigorous and grueling as there were strict standards on physical fitness, OC spray (also referred to as “pepper spray”) was included in our training. Each officer was required to “qualify” which simply meant that we got our butts kicked and were sprayed in the eyes with “pepper spray.” Tasers, batons, hand-cuffing, etc, was all part of our training. Aside from training, having been surrounded by 2000 inmates is not a fun job, especially when most of those don’t like law enforcement officers (have you served time in prison?).
Since January 2007 I have worked with the NOBTS campus police department. I love my job: I would quickly put my life in harm’s way to protect my girlfriend or ANY member, student, faculty, or otherwise regardless of how they view law enforcement officers, including you Jeremy.

If you think it is a joke then let me advise you that three tickets any NOBTS student receives for a “moving violation” is immediate suspension of their driving “privileges” on campus. If you think we are joking then try us. I will advise you, however, that any attempt to use force to circumvent the authority given to any police officer regardless of their “social ranking” (IE: Campus Police, Military Police, City Police) will result in the use of force.

If you fail to stop to a campus police officer with their strobe lights on attempting to pull you over will also result in force. If you feel the need to “run” from the campus police and decide to bring your resistance into the city (off of campus) rest assured you’ll have NOPD and the Louisiana Army National Guard military police on you in a heartbeat. There is a saying “you might out run a cop but you won’t out run his radio.”

If you do have any complaints about the behavior of campus police I suggest that you follow the principle stated in the bible. I would post it here on Facebook but from what I read in your comment it seems to the naked eye that you should spend more time in your bible.

Finally Jeremy I would like to state that I am displeased with your attitude towards each of us that serve. Each department on this seminary campus works together to achieve one common goal. We want to bring people to Christ so that they may have everlasting life. Next time, instead of criticizing the people that serve to protect you so that you can make disciples, instead ENCOURAGE those that serve. I leave you with Romans 12:1-8
