Captain’s Log 37 (Hurricane Season 2007)

The 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season starts June 1, 2007 and will last until November 20, 2007. Anybody that you ask down here in the gulf states will probbly tell you that hurricane season is on their mind especially since almost all of us are still recovering from the aftermath of 2005′s hurricane Katrina.

Tonight started my preparations for this year’s hurricane season. I took a stroll down to Lowe’s to buy a few things on my “To Do: Stuff to Buy” list. Since things might get expensive (I dropped a good amount of change tonight) I decided to stock up in stages… stages being every two weeks I get a paychek.
The items from tonight’s campaign include:

  • One heavy duty (it’s thick!) storage container
    storagebox.jpg

  • Two master lock adjustable padlocks (although I might need 4)
  • One pack of 100 black zip ties
  • One large role of duct tape
  • One role of electrical tape
  • Two 8 packs of Duracel batteries (the eight packs are cheaper than two of the 4 packs)

  • One 24 pack of Dasani water. 1/2 liter bottles @ 3 liters a day = 4 day supply of water

All of this is put into that massive storage container and locked up. I’ll leave that big plastic box in the back of my SUV until I need it (hopefully not this year). Next on my “To Buy” list is a gas can, ammunition (for my job), Chem Lights, toiletries (shampoo, soap, razor), and some MRE’s. Some things I have already purchased and just need to put in the box when it gets closer to “gearing up” (IE: 48 hours before the hurricane makes landfall). This includes extra ammunition, extra Motorola HT1250LS batteries, and laptop.

Since my list is probably a little different than yours (that being ammunition and Motorola radios), NOAA has created a supply kit list tailored for the average human being. You can check it out at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/prepare/supply_kit.shtml.
I’m going to keep a total of the amount spent on emergency hurricane preparedness supplies and see how much it cost me to be prepared. I wonder if the government will reimburse me for all of this stuff?

    1. Thanks for the trackback. However, that blog isn’t maintained any longer. The new post is at

    2. You need guns, ammo, and a tank too, just in case something gets out of hand….
