Captain’s Log 42 (I So Have A Laptop Upgrade)

For the non-geeks out there this will probably make no sense whatsoever so go do whatever a non geek does.

For everybody else:
My Toshiba Satellite M45-S1691 runs with an Intel Celeron M380 @ 1.6GHz and a stock CPU. FYI this CPU is Intel Stock Number SL8MN if you are interested.

I’ve been doing research on this Intel CPU and originally wanted to upgrade my CPU to something faster without overclocking the CPU. I wanted a stock 1.8 GHz CPU or 2.0 GHz but CPUs with a Micro-FCPGA package are hard to come by, at least when I tried to find them. Upgrade to a new CPU was out of the question for the time being so my next option was to overclock the little bugger.

During my searches I stumbled across http://www.overclockers.com/tips1232/. On that page, the author describes the procedures for overclocking a Toshiba M40 with a Celeron M 360J. The model laptop and processor type weren’t too far off from my processor so I read through all of his instructions, in which I finally concluded that I could do the same with mine… or fry my laptop. Either way I was going to be in for a surprise.

Going through the steps and going nuts trying to get a wire small enough to fit into holes the size a bit larger than a needle I finally succeeded in jumpering pins 15 and 16 on Row C of the CPU socket. Powered on my Toshiba M45 laptop and sure ’nuff it was running at 2.1 GHz.
w00t w00t! My stock 1.6 is now 2.1! What is even more unique though is the fact that the temperatures are still in the same heat range, although my picture shows the overclocked temperature LOWER than the original! :->
