Atheros AR5005G WPA2 Support

Good news! I just realized today, and apparently the update has been out since August of 2005, that the Atheros AR5005G wireless card supports WPA2 if you, the end user, installs Windows XP Hotfix KB893357.
I’ve always wondered why I couldn’t see WPA2 on my Wireless Network List in Windows XP SP2 but never actually researched it until today (I’m sick and have been quarantined to my apartment so I have lots of free time).
A direct link to the hotfix can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893357.
I also recommend that if you have your own wireless network and all of your clients can support WPA2 that you enable the option on your router or wireless access point.

A bit of caution: Users of DD-WRT using the WDS option CANNOT use WPA2 and by enabling this option you will shut down WDS functionality!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip. I, also, was not aware of this…wonder why it wasn’t one of the automatic hotfixes Windows sends in.

I wondered the same thing. I wonder if it “breaks” certain cards but even then you think the jokers at Microsoft would have had the update check the card’s drivers before patching to verify whether or not the card was problematic. I guessed they figured it would be easier for us to stumble across the update then do the research themselves.
From what I can tell, so far, it also works on Intel cards.
Glad I could help :->
