UPS Delayed Packages and a Fake Train Derailment?
One commenter on a post I wrote a few weeks ago had this to say when they received information that a package due to arrive today was delayed due to a train derailment in Vernon, Ca.
“This is all BS, I just got notice that my package due to arrive on 3-19-08 has been rescheduled due to a derailment in Vernon, CA also, how many derailments could there be, this is a ploy to excuse UPS of their wrong doings and screw ups….no doubht.”
Certainly this couldn’t be the same train derailment from March 6th that delayed my package, could it? http://johndball.blaize.net/2008/03/06/worse-case-scenario-the-train-derails-but-thats-unlikely/
Can anybody find any news article about these mysterious train derailments, or is UPS just covering for their ineptness to deliver packages on time?

Like many of you, when I saw the UPS train derailment notice, I think of all the UPS packages that were probably damaged or destroyed during this accident. Apparently there was a train derailment on April 3rd. But it was not the UPS train with all the packages on it. A coal train derailed, causing the rails in that area to be shut down affecting all trains using that railway. So while indeed there was a train derailment affecting the on-time UPS deliveries, as UPS claims, what they don’t tell you is that is was not their train. So this “train derailment” was nothing more then a traffic jam as far as UPS is concerned. Leave it to UPS to make it sound worse then it really is.
Troy said this on April 7th, 2008 at 21:31
UPS is at it again and has stated that a Train Derailment near Atlanta is at fault for delayed packages. How many times will they go to this excuse before people switch everything to Fed X?

The scan location is NOT where the derailment happens it’s the expected HUB for distribution. So my says, “OAKLAND” – that’s being said, I can’t find any news articles of a derailment except for a coal carrying train in Colorado that destroyed 600 feet of track…maybe it’s holding up the UPS train…sounds to me that UPS need to off load and get these packages moving…

While all of our packages could have been on the same train, or hit by the same train, or something, it seems strange that there’s no news of the derailment. It could have happened somewhere between Hodgkins, IN and Oakland but it’s on the Internet. Sheesh. I really wanted to get this package before the weekend, too.
Lisa N. said this on October 10th, 2008 at 03:10
That’s strange, on the same day (today) San Ramon had a train derail just like the one above in Oakland!! Is it the rails, or the trains? Maybe FedEx is tampering with all of UPS’ trains in one giant corporate sabotage. Forget the economic crisis…our freakin’ train infrastructure is falling apart! Where is Steam Engine Willy when you need him? Our kids are going to be pissed because there Disney DVDs did not arrive in time for Friday-Family-Movie-Night.
What can Brown do for me? Fix your stupid trains or bring back the ponies!!

Lang said this on October 10th, 2008 at 18:40
As others have reported, it’s the destination hub that’s listed, not the location of the derailment. Also, the train carrying the package could be blocked by the derailed train, not derailed itself. In this particular case, it could be a train that derailed near Tehachipi, CA on the morning of the 9th: http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/ViewPost/77953
(This particular stretch of track seems to suffer an unusual number of derailments and is the main route for cross-country freight trains that pass though the L.A. area on their way North.)
Ed said this on October 10th, 2008 at 19:59
got a train derailment message also. I understand that it could be another train derailed and UPS is being stalled by it but, if this derailed train has caused all these problems, why isn’t it on the news or something? I’m left in the dark about whether my order will ever be delivered. I don’t even know if it is on the train at this point! I don’t even even know if it’s the UPS train that is off the rails, or another one. Frustrating. Would be nice to have some information on this.

Greg here just north of Seattle. Funny, I found this blog when I was Google searching the tragic and ghostly Portland train derailment. Was to receive an LCD TV from Costco online yesterday so I got real excited when my UPS guy pulled up to the house around 11AM. All he had was some perfume for my duaghter. So I asked him about train derailments and he responded as if it were the first time he’d ever heard of it. Now he’s a cool guy and I’ve known him for years so I believed him. He told me that no deliveries would come to me again until Monday. So I go and check the tracking status later yesterday and it tells me that that my TV is in transit and on-time! Hooray! Another truck will surely arrive before 7PM with my now out of stock Tv! 7PM. 7:30PM. 8PM. 9PM. No TV. Today’s status no longer indicates “on-time” just “in-transit”. Now my TV will come on Monday. Nobody will be home since I took Friday off to receive it. I don’t want to hastle my neighbors and ask them to sign or hold it. Bottom line is, this is a good problem to have! Here I am in my comfortable home, with my health, my family’s health and love. I have a job to go to. I’m waiting for an item that a large percentage of the population would love to be able to afford right now. So, unless you’re waiting for your meds or something essential, let’s give UPS a break. Thank your driver when he finally gets there. It’s a tough job!

hey guys I think when you see train derailment just means that the freight was derailed onto a spur either to conect to another train or for off loading not that the train crashed

Imagine that, to find an entire website about UPS train derailments!! HA. My fiancee’s brother works for UPS, and he said that a train derailment is the standard BS that they use when a pallet of shipments gets put on the wrong train or if the pallet gets left behind. Same story for “mechanical problems caused a delay” for shipments that are going by plane that get delayed. The BEST thing is that I paid for GUARANTEED 3 DAY SERVICE, and up until 10:30PM on the night it was to be delivered, it said that it was ON TIME. Great huh?

I just tracked my shipment and it said EXACTLY the same thing… train derailment.. I work for an overnight Currier and I happen to know that they do not ship by train! I do however know that the ground trailer drivers that haul those double and triple trailers are nicknamed ROAD TRAINS. When theirs a delay or a breakdown in one of those trucks the call it a DERAILMENT

and YES, they call this an accident so they don’t have to refund your shipping fee if they are late and don’t deliver it when it supposed to be there. It’s their way around a refund, I believe it’s in their shipping agreement regarding any weather or unexpected delays regarding an accident. Nice loophole huh…? BTW if you can prove there was NO derailment in the news or news papers or the associated press or even their ups web site then you may have a case but it may not be worth the time and effort to fight for that refund. UPS does NOT make it easy, that’s why I choose FedEx or DHL.

This is the third train derailment in two years with these guys, so I thought something was fishy.
Here I am concerned about the possible loss of life or injury to the average joe Train conductor, never mind my package, and all along its ups using a loop hole trying to save a buck! WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU: How about lie to us the consumer, the ones that keep them in buisness. I say we all start using FED X! I think they went to the well far to many times on this one, at the expense of our time and money! I for one am fed up with being taken advantage of! I am done with UPS! Hello FEDX, HELLO DHL, I am your newest customer

Anyway, from Item 823 / Section 6(c) of the UPS Rules and Charges (available here: http://ltl.upsfreight.com/shipping/rules/index.aspx#823), exceptions to the LTL (less-than-truckload) Guarantee include:
“When the delay or failure to perform is the result of Impractical Operations, Acts of God, inclement weather, industry disruptions, fires, strikes, the public enemy, the authority of law including customs inspections, a disruption in communications or an information systems failure.”
So, if the delay is due to something other than one of these things (which is hard to imagine) UPS has a whole bunch of “transportation fees” to refund, certainly tens of thousands of dollars. It’s inarguable that there is “incentive” for UPS to choose a delay explanation which qualifies as an exception (such as TRAIN DERAILMENT being an industry disruption). What is arguable is whether they ever choose a delay explanation which they know to be false.
By the way, I love that Johnny Depp would qualify as an exception if he somehow held up a UPS train.

it appears my package has joined all of yours. From some of the earlier comments it looks like everyone ends up getting their package. Just late. At least the derailment happened on a monday and not on a thursday giving them alllllll weekend to hold the package hostage. I’m sure the same could have happened with FedEx of even USPS.
kevin said this on January 26th, 2010 at 08:13
CALM DOWN people. From someone who knows someone in the railroad industry, there are several train derailments PER WEEK across the country that we don’t hear about. These are not the multi boxcar pileups that we see on the news, but simply a car or two having their wheels come off the tracks. Unfortunately when this happens it can take a lot of time (several hours to more than a day) to address & in the meanwhile all trains behind using the same track have to be stopped if they cannot be rerouted. UPS is not lying, they’re simply at the mercy of the 19th century technology they are using.

Just to add one more note, I searched for train derailments in the news, and the only thing that came up was a train derailment last sunday 15 miles east of Bakersfield, Ca. San Pablo is 286 miles north-west of bakersfield, and my package is supposed to be east/north of San pablo… In other words the train derailment is in the opposite direction of where package is heading!

I’ve finally got the answer we all have been looking for on the so-called “TRAIN DERAILMENT” from two blogs that were posted on here. This is a result of the combination of the two. Here it goes…
My fiancee’s brother works for UPS, and he said that a train derailment is the standard BS that they use when a pallet of shipments gets put on the wrong train or if the pallet gets left behind.
UPS does NOT make it easy,

I’ve got a package that was to be delivered in Atlanta tomorrow morning that has been delayed until Monday due to a train derailment in Illinois. Odd that the next status update shows it arriving safe in the Illinois transfer station. Seems like a delay between Illinois and Georgia because several other packages arrived on time and the same timeline. Hmm… suspicious.

Woah! I just had a package delayed due to a train derailment. When I searched and found this site, I got suspicious. Then I looked deeper and discovered there actually was a train derailed yesterday in Jackson Township, IN! This is right off the interstate that runs between the UPS hubs in Plattsburgh, NY and Hodgkins, IL!
For once, it seems, it isn’t a lie.
