Third Party MiniPCI Hack for Thinkpad

I’ve been trying to hack the BIOS to this IBM Thinkpad R40 for a few hours now and finally gave up. I modified the BIOS to read aftermarket MiniPCI cards which should have added the aftermarket card to IBM’s built in “Whitelist” of approved devices, but I failed to accomplish that.

So in the spirit of bullheadedness, I kept looking around online for a “different” approach to break through the great wall of idiocy that is IBM’s proprietary MiniPCI list.

I came across this website http://www.thirdblessing.com that had three simple steps:

1. download no-1802.com
2. boot into DOS mode
3. run no-1802.com
And the best line of the whole instruction page
“If nothing happens – you should be able to finally install your card.”

I followed those steps (and booted into DOS using Hiram’s Boot CD [you know where to look]) and YEAH I have a new MiniPCI network card in this IBM Thinkpad :)

In case the download link doesn’t work for the no1802.com file, I’ve uploaded it here: http://www.johndball.com-a.googlepages.com/programs-no1802.com
